Stages of Desire, volume 39 in the Estreno Contemporary Spanish Plays series, includes two plays, Scarred by the Wind by Juan Carlos Rubio, translated from Spanish to English by Iride Lamartina-Lens; and Dark Stone by Alberto Conejero translated from Spanish to English by Gary J. Racz. Scarred by the Wind takes today s audience/readers beyond propaganda, politics or cynicism, and opens the doors to a much-needed discussion about love. The playwright fearlessly debunks many of today s romantic myths and stereotypes surrounding love and awakens a vintage awareness and affirmation of love revealed through a poetic dialogue that stirs the hearts and minds of audiences of all ages. Dark Stone evokes the specter of Federico Garcia Lorca, Spain's most renown 20th century poet and playwright who was murdered at the outbreak of Spain's Civil War (1936-39). Lorca is the absent force whose life and loss irrevocably shape those with whom he came into contact. Set in a Nationalist prison, Rafael Rodriguez Rapun, Lorca's former lover, and a young prison guard--two young men from different social classes and opposing sides of the Civil War, manage to bond as they reveal their inner most fears and desires during this final night before Rapun's execution.
