On May 27, 1937, over four hundred children boarded a ship called the Mexique and sailed for Morelia, Mexico, fleeing the violence of the Spanish Civil War. This would just be a short stay, they thought. They'd be home in a few months. But the war dragged on and the children stayed, waiting and wondering, in Mexico. When the war finally ended, a dictator ruled Spain. Home was an even more dangerous than before.
