The large mastiff Berganza along with his mat-mate Cipión unexpectedly finds himself with the ability to speak. The two dogs have a lot to say and may have only one short night in which to say it, as it is unknown when this gift of speech might be taken away. Berganza's story is a long one, for he has had many owners and a tempestuous life both in the countryside and in town. And often enough Berganza will interrupt himself with many side-tales and much gossip; and then he tends to philosophize on it all until he is called back to his main purpose by friend Cipión, who, it turns out, is a bit of a gossip himself.
